Peeling in DTF prints can be frustrating, but it’s usually caused by adhesion issues, curing mistakes, or improper fabric care. Here’s how to troubleshoot and prevent peeling for long-lasting prints.
1. Incomplete Curing of Adhesive Powder
🔹 Issue: If the powder isn’t fully cured, the design won’t bond properly.
✅ Fix: Cure the adhesive at 160–170°C (320–338°F) for 60–90 seconds until the powder melts evenly and turns glossy and smooth. Use an infrared thermometer to check even heat distribution.
💡 Tip: If the print peels off easily or feels powdery, the curing is incomplete. Reheat for a few more seconds.
2. Low or Uneven Heat Pressing
🔹 Issue: Incorrect temperature, time, or pressure can prevent strong adhesion.
✅ Fix: Use a heat press set to 160–170°C (320–338°F) for 15 seconds with medium-high pressure. Apply consistent, firm pressure to avoid weak bonding.
💡 Tip: If parts of the design peel while others stick, your heat press may have cold spots. Use a heat press pillow or ensure even pressure across the platen.
3. Peeling the Film Too Early or Too Late
🔹 Issue: Peeling at the wrong temperature can affect adhesion.
✅ Fix: Follow the correct peeling instructions for your DTF film type:
- Hot peel: Remove immediately after pressing while warm.
- Warm peel: Wait a few seconds before peeling.
- Cold peel: Let it cool completely before removing.
💡 Tip: If peeling is uneven, rub the transfer lightly with a cloth before removing.
4. Poor Fabric Choice
🔹 Issue: Not all fabrics bond well with DTF transfers.
✅ Fix: Use smooth, tightly woven cotton, polyester, or cotton/poly blends for the best adhesion. Avoid heavily textured, waterproof, or coated fabrics.
💡 Tip: If you must print on tricky fabrics, use a pre-treatment spray to improve adhesion.
5. Incorrect Washing & Drying
🔹 Issue: Hot water, fabric softeners, and high-heat drying can break down the print.
✅ Fix:
✔ Wash inside out in cold water on a gentle cycle.
✔ Avoid bleach, fabric softeners, and harsh detergents.
✔ Air dry or tumble dry on low heat.
💡 Tip: If the print starts to lift after washing, press it again with parchment paper for a few seconds to reseal the design.
